Pilar Cysts

Pilar cysts, also known as trichilemmal cysts, are small, round, skin-filled sacs that develop just under the skin on the scalp. They are common and benign, typically causing no pain or discomfort. However, if a pilar cyst becomes inflamed, it may cause redness, tenderness, and swelling. Dermatologists can typically diagnose pilar cysts based on their appearance and location. Treatment options include removal through surgery, or simply leaving the cyst alone if it is not causing any problems.
